This week we really focused on relationships (more in the beginning of the week). This trimester seems to be all about how relationships affect things but this week we discussed and read an article talking about the symbiosis relationships. These were very scientific but i started to understand how they could relate to relationships in Of Mice and Men. It was actually pretty cool how you could take something so scientific talking about living organisms and relate it to real friendships/love relationships. We also started reading October Sky and I am very excited to see what kind of relationships are going to be seen within the characters in there.
This week it went by really fast because we had a 2 hour delay and we also didn't have regular classes on Wednesday because of testing. The thing that stuck out to me the most this week was relating our big question to Of Mice and Men. My big question was: "Does love give us a reason to accomplish our goals?" My answer to this was a definite yes. There was no question about whether my answer was yes or no, the question in my head was WHY??? After I thought about it for a while I realized that in this book it gives us a reason to accomplish our goals because we or George in the book wanted to give Lennie a good stable life so that things were easier on both of them. Then this thought pondered me. If love gives us a reason to accomplish our goals and the goal was for Lennie and George to get a farm together, then how come George shot him and didn't take him and run? I'm still thinking about this one because I just cannot come up with a valid answer. So this week I am left with a large question on the table. This is okay though because I'm slowly learning in this class that questions are how we learn so this only means that I'm furthering my mind and imagination. This week went by really fast because we had a snow day on Monday and then Tuesday was our first day back. Then on Thursday I had a field trip to tour North Wood University so I was gone all day. I would say that the things we focused on most this week was reading Of Mice and Men, and also writing 150 words about each chapter. Writing 150 words would probably be the hardest thing we did though because it forced us to go beyond just writing what we think. This was something we called going beneath the surface. It means that if we keep writing it shows so much more about how things relate, foreshadowing, comparisons, and it also keep peoples attention. The chapters that were really boring made it hard to write 150 words because I couldn't think of anything else to say and I felt as though I was either repeating myself or talking about things that didn't relate to the question asked. |
